What is "hard" water?

While in Cheyenne, cold temperatures can freeze water solid most of the winter, "hard" water refers to the amount of two minerals, calcium and magnesium, in the water. These minerals can prevent soaps from lathering or creating suds. Therefore cleaning with the water was considered "hard" or difficult. Water containing little calcium or magnesium is called "soft" water.

Hard water can leave white deposits or scales on dishes, cooking pots or coffee makers. Some people like the way their hair and skin feel when using softer water, others don't like soft water because they feel the soap won't rinse off. Hard water or soft water is a matter of personal preference.
