Sewer Backup

Sewer Backups

For sewer backups, call 307-637-6471. The Board of Public Utilities has crews ready to respond to a sewer call 24/7. If there is a plug in the City’s sewer main, the crews will restore flows. If there is a blockage in the service line connecting the home or business to the City’s sewer main, you may need to call a plumber.

Cleaning up after a sewer backup

After sewer flow is restored, you will need to clean up areas exposed to sewage. Many people choose to hire a professional cleaning service for this task.

Health & Safety Precautions

If choosing to clean up the sewage yourself, take precautions to protect your health and safety. Here are some tips

  • Use rubber gloves and boots.

  • Wash contaminated areas with soap and water, then disinfect. A mixture of a quarter cup of bleach added to a gallon of water will disinfect, but you can also use other prepared solutions.

  • Avoid using electrical appliances, devices or outlets in wet areas.

  • Clean up after a sewer backup as soon as possible. Quickly cleaning up after a sewer backup prevents possible health hazards and additional property loss due to microorganisms and mold.

The City of Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities does not provide or arrange for any clean up inside a building following a sewer back up. The occupant or property owner has the responsibility for the clean-up.
